Recent Wave of State-Level Gun-Control Schemes – Was This a Punt From The White House or a Strategic Move? Part 1

Firearms

Commentary, Analysis, and Investigative Reporting on Issues Concerning Gun Owners.

By John Peterson

An alarming trend is rearing its ugly head as we are seeing increasing attempts at state-level aimed firearms bans and confiscations, as well as renewal of previous gun-control attempts.  We are investigating how this, the influence of recent massacres, and the possibility that the president’s action could have been a catalyst to set in motion a new wave of state-level gun control.

Firearms-owning and liberty-minded citizens in a number of states are now back on the defensive against renewed attempts to infringe upon their firearms civil rights. Adding to this is the highly publicized gun-control rally on March 24.  Despite the vastly exaggerated claims about the size of the event and its true nature, the deceptively named and hyper-partisan “March For Our Lives” undoubtedly will influence some hearts and minds due to its oversaturation in the mainstream media.   All of this in response to the two most recent mass shootings, the Las Vegas massacre of October 1, 2017, and the Parkland, Florida, school shooting.   As we all well know, in addition to their ongoing efforts to chip away at our civil rights, the leftists/democrat party and their allies elsewhere in the establishment exploit periodic tragedies as a matter of standard practice.  They are now invigorated like never before.  Considering that these most recent tragedies were the highest fatalities for a mass shooting and second highest for a school shooting in U.S. history, the anti-gun forces see this as a golden opportunity to push their agenda like never before, despicable and unscrupulous as ever.

But, adding to this gun-control maelstrom is a chain of events in recent months that we have been tracking.  This includes how the president has influenced the situation and a series of strong statements, proposals, reversals, and changes of venue for what and by whom any new firearms related legislation would be pursued. Gun owners across the country are alarmed.

Firstly, within hours of the Las Vegas shooting, it was pretty clear that new control would be pursued by the Trump Administration.  Less than ten months earlier, both the White House and Congress rolled back some Obama-era restrictions on firearms purchases.   However, beginning with the televised February 28 White House bipartisan roundtable with lawmakers, President Trump began to make some surprising (and even shocking) statements regarding a willingness to accept certain new gun control measures, as well as some mocking of certain lawmakers for being “afraid” or “petrified” of the NRA.  Following the meeting, he met with the NRA leadership for a second time that week on March 1, then announcing three minutes after NRA-ILA’s Chris Cox did so on twitter:  “Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!”

While this was going on, the first major “post-massacre” gun control was on its way to becoming law. The knee-jerk reaction and a rush to “do something” resulted in a major setback for gun rights in Florida when Governor Scott signed into law, on March 9, a ban on “bump-stocks,” firearm purchasing age-hike to 21, as well as other infringing aspects of the law.  Anyone seeing the intent and letter of that law can see the hand of democrat party anti-gun groups in its crafting throughout that process. The NRA immediately challenged some parts of the law in court beginning the same day.

Then, on March 11, following the combination of the school shooting in Florida three weeks earlier, the White House roundtable, and the private meetings with the NRA, the White House rolled out its set of proposals, which were devoid of most of what the president had stated at the roundtable would be under consideration.  Much in that list of White House proposals was what the NRA has been lobbying for, some that his base has wanted, and much looking nothing like what he had stated at the roundtable.  Once again, many on all sides were stunned or at least confused by the shift in direction.  Interestingly, the new Florida law contained several of the provisions that the president had initially stated that he would consider, but then backed away from.

Next in this chain of events came very early the next morning, via twitter.  Perhaps the most significant communiqué yet was the president signaling that certain proposals discussed at the roundtable he would not take action on, leaving it to the states to decide for themselves. He had stated after his proposals were revealed the day before that he did not think that Congress would be able to come to agreement on changing the law for the minimum age to buy a firearm, via this telltale tweet:   “….On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting. States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly).”

STATE-BANS-Trump-Tweet-March-12th-for-OSG-FN-Peterson-2018Was this a “punt” or handoff to the states?  Has this shift away from federal action served as the “launch code” for anti-gunners at the state level to launch a renewed quest for gun control?  If so, we are already seeing the ugly ramifications of this.  Several states have elements within them moving to enact more gun control, much of which is from the same template and specifics attempted elsewhere for years and/or that were once part of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that expired in September 2004.  How alarming is this?

So, how do the president’s most recent actions square with his campaign promises, his stated intentions, and his professed allegiance to gun owners?

On the one hand, consider that he has verbally come out stronger than any president in memory on behalf of the Second Amendment, self-defense, and other firearms civil liberties.  On his 99th day in office, President Trump stated to the NRA, “Let me make a simple promise to every one of the freedom-loving Americans in the audience. As your president, I will never, ever infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Never, ever. Freedom is not a gift from government. Freedom is a gift from God.”  He states that he owns and has carried a self-defense handgun as well as has had a concealed carry permit in New York City for many years.

But, does he have latent roots and some pre-politician inclinations towards accepting some gun control, as reflected in his older positions or statements, that make him amenable to some of this crafty PR-firm phrased “common sense gun control” and more recent knee-jerk reactions manifesting as ludicrous, implausible schemes? Have the Democrats found some “chink in his armor” or otherwise manipulated the president on some vulnerability or being open to certain gun-control measures?   The close proximity of notorious anti-gunner and hard leftist Dianne Feinstein to the president at the roundtable made many of us very uncomfortable, wondering “why was she even allowed in that meeting?”  Her reaction was obviously gleeful in response to his telling them to add her previous gun-control inputs to a new bill.  Why would such a staunch defender of the Second Amendment permit one of its enemies to have any input at all about firearms freedoms?  Some are now asking: is the president truly a defender of the Second Amendment and firearms-related civil rights?

Or, does he have a yet-to-be-disclosed clever plan? Could this be strategic maneuvering, considering his decades of mastery as a deal maker?  Has the NRA, who apparently has his ear and whose senior leadership met with him before and then three days after his February White House roundtable, been giving him strategic advice or specific suggestions on acceptable compromises?  What we do know is that we once again have our rights under assault, and must react yet again to the onslaught of the anti-gun leftists, which includes a new wave of state level campaigns to further restrict and even eliminate firearms ownership.  Has a “green light” been given that sets in motion more robust assaults on firearms civil rights at the state level?  Will the federal government turn a blind eye to a federal civil right to be infringed upon even more at the state level?

Whatever the case, despite the previous and very strong declarations by the president in defense of firearms freedoms and the Second Amendment, American firearms owners should realize that this is not the time to let our guard down or assume that we are safe from the maniacal gun-grabbing ploys of the leftists. That could be catastrophic.  Now is the time for even more vigilance and fighting the good fight for our civil liberties without relent.

Note:  In Part 2 and future installments, we will continue our investigation both by state break-down and how it correlates to any signals or hand-off at the federal level.

  1. Trump has said he is wants to ban bump stocks, raise the age to buy a legal firearm to 21, and confiscate from “dangerous” individuals without due process. He has started more restrictions than Obama and pro firearm people are lulled into a false sense of security. The 2nd amendment is more shaky than ever. Individual states are passingf all kinds of bans and talking confiscation from certain people. This is how the 2nd amendment dies. Bit by bit. The anti 2nd folks are well financed and well organized, led by the anti gun media. Those of us on the other side are not organized or well financed and have little media support.

    1. Don’t get the wrong idea, they come for my guns Molon Labe and they’ll hate the greeting. Bump Stocks turn a gun into something it isn’t. NO rifle was made to fire that fast. The upshot, the gun jams or even explodes, and God help anyone foolish enough to fire another round to clear the chamber. Your best bet is buy a new barrel that is much thicker. As far as the dems chipping away at A 2, haven’t they been trying for over a year? They will reach a point where civil war will break out. Need I ask who is better equipped? 1.8 million military and 1,600,000 hunters (smallest number) so I think we’re safe. However, did anyone say we’d only stay with conventional weapons? There are so many chem weapons (cheap ones) at our disposal.

    2. I’m getting that SINKING feeling that’s a WOLF in SHEEP’S clothing,… “EXPENSIVE” SHEEP’S clothing, too!

  2. Shocking? NOT one measure of Gun Control or Confiscation was successful under President Obama.

In FACT President Barack Obama signed legislation permitting carry of a firearm on Federal park land and approved transportation of legally owned weapons on Amtrak.

Isn’t it grand what our Current POTUS is proposing? Laughing my ass off…

  3. Many States can come up with all the laws they want banning the AR15. Got news for those Communists, any like law will be void/invalid/nugatory. The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the United States & outranks all others. Banning AR’s, & forcibly taking them will turn into an into
an armed American patriot rebellion. Good Luck DumboRats…

  4. Check this out (below):

The book is written by a former military guy who decides to tell all about the American government. He discusses the secret societies like the Illuminati, Protocols of the Elders of Zion, UFOs, The Kennedy assassination, and a bunch of other cool “secretive” stuff.
They are playing by their script… And like the pied piper we are just “marching along” to the tune….

“The government encouraged the manufacture and importation of
military firearms for the criminals to use. This is intended to foster a
feeling of insecurity, which would lead the American people to voluntarily
disarm themselves by passing laws against firearms. Using drugs and
hypnosis on mental patients in a process called Orion, the CIA inculcated
the desire in these people to open fire on school yards and thus inflame the
antigun lobby. This plan is well under way, and so far is working perfectly.
The middle class is begging the government to do away with the 2nd
    amendment.
From the 1991 Book “Behold the Pale Horse”

    1. Since I was in country in 1970 I’ve understood that we were on our own. Now after the Bundy Ranch incident yes the Illuminati and nwo and Btw, the cia and all other so-called intelligence agencies have lied to us continually, starting with HW’s reign. The middle class? Only some and it depends on where. It will never change in middle America (Mid-west, Rustbelt etc.)

  5. So, the schoolkids don’t feel safe on campus. Well then, I don’t feel safe with them behind the steering wheel. Told my state rep, While you have your pen out, go ahead and raise the age to 21 for driver license and cellphone ownership too

    1. Kids are irrelevant. Until they’ve carried a pack for a mile without stopping, I’m not listening to them. One was from Cuba, an oppressed to say the least place. And a teacher has found the perfect solution, arm the kids with rocks. Rock paper gun? We all know how that will turn out.

  6. Trump has always been a blowhard and is now learning to be a politician as well. How can that be good for Constitutional laws? In FL our “2nd A supporting” legislators & governor passed a knee-jerk bill that does nothing to prevent another murderer from being what he is…a law breaking murderer. But they still managed to chip away at every law abiding citizen’s Constitutional rights, all the while claiming victory for 2nd A! It was nothing more than posturing & fence sitting for re-election. Do you think those new restrictions, short of being overturned in court, will ever be voted back to citizens?!! Fat chance. If it can happen here it can happen in your state.

  7. The NRA has helped cause the current disaster had they got on board to ban bum stocks, improvements to the NICS system and support judicially imposed firearm removal from people who are a threat to themselves or others and in exchange for national reciprocity they wouldn’t be the target they have become. By fighting each of these actions simply to keep the fear in gun owners mind do they can ask for more donations they have done more harm than good. This would have given trump a viable common sense plan which would have done a decent job of protecting the 2nd amendment

    1. I think you are right on! The N.R.A has negotiated away most of the Second Amendment already, and no matter what you do the left only wants more until they try to confiscate them!. NO MORE NEGOTIATING!

    2. have you ever bumpfired a weapon? it is very in-accurate.
the crowd is lucky he was shooting on SEMI automatic and AIMING with a 30 caliber weapon.
He would have gotten a lot more folks. (as the rounds go through MORE then one person!)
What we need is MENTAL health facilities that the gov’t closed around 1980 to “save money”.
Well, you moved the NUT job….unfortunately AFTER he kills and maims others to a prison.
Tell me again where the savings are.
It is not the NRA’s fault anymore the it is the Popes fault!! Wake up and smell the coffee!!

  8. Perhaps this “punt” to the states by President Trump will allow the local governments to “out” themselves in their stance on gun control. It is then up to “we the people” to go to the polls and vote AGAINST these gun-grabbers. We need to exhaust the peaceful measures before we pull the trigger on these retards. Just sayin’…..

  9. Look how many people are killed involved in automobile accidents while using cell phones.
I think that we should BAN THE USE OF CELL PHONES IN AUTOMOBILES. Like wise look at how many teenagers are killed while driving. As stated earlier we should make it manditory to be 21 to have ti obtain a drivers license. As with cell hones, automobiles, or guns, none ever killed anyone. All had a person behind all of them.

  10. The gun or anti-gun issue will improve when people realize the constitution and amendments, even the second appy to the federal government. Read it! it limits the power of the federal government over the people and states. The states and the people are the sovereign entities of the government. What counts is the states. The states can vote to ignore the federal laws that would control the internal operation of the states. Continue to oppose anti 2nd amendment changes, but concentrate on state laws. All but 6 states have there own 2nd amendment, they supercede federal 2nd amendment law. Not one federal official signed the constitution, it was signed by the states, all thirteen of them. That is why any changes to it must be ratified by a majority of states.

  11. ODD, It’s MARCH 31, 2018 …Butt….ONLY “NOW” 12:30 PM, Huh….how did ALL these REPLIES GET, 8 – 9 hours LATER than “this one”. JUST”… will lead to CONFISCATION! Way to go….PRESIDENT TRUMP, “I”back….ed you”.

  12. Dare I say it, THERE ARE more than 7 weapons fully loaded with a round in their perspective chambers.. BEEN like this OVER 7 years, ODD… NOT A SINGLE GUN shot at ME, nor ANYONE ELSE..”How does that work again?” Oh, wait… yeah, I’M NOT MENTALLY imbalanced ! THIS IS the REASON that has a 90+% chance to get “THEIR” Civil Unrest..”THEY” need to use excuse “OF” confiscation

  13. The gun-grabbers in the state legislatures want to “make hay while the sun shines” just as they did with the revulsion following Sandy Hook. My own state passed the “Gun Safety Act of 2013” limiting magazine capacity, type of firearm you are permitted to purchase, and several other impediments to the purchase of firearms, with the proviso that the possession of the banned items was “grandfathered” for those who already owned them. Does it surprise anyone that a bill was introduced during this session of the legislature which would have empowered the state to seize the “grandfathered” items? Fortunately, it was withdrawn before it came up for debate – but should there be another atrocity like Sandy Hook or Parkland you may be sure that this sort of inane legislation will rear its ugly head yet again.

  14. There will ultimately be an uprising in this country—-caused by government’s heavy handed, freedom taking way of doing things. It happened in 1776 for the same reasons–it will happen again. Government is drunk with power, establishes and enforces different laws for different “classes” — example, Hillary Clinton . it always becomes corrupt as it seizes power and oppresses people and freedom. It is the nature of the beast. Seized power is corruption—every government that has ever existed has followed the same path—until the rank and file has taken all it can take of being trampled upon and said “Enough”. It is very close to happening again.

  15. Seems to me if the super well funded and entrenched, media promotef communist left which is working towards the ultimate goal of revocation of 2A altogether, and total confiscation of civilian arms,
    That on the flip side,;
The support in legal matters as well as pro-active media and just in every way possible, put a positive spin on all things firearms. So far, the communist liberals have been working steadily to get their way.
And guess what? There is NO even slightly organized efforts on a national basis to overcome and turn around the villainizing that is happening to 2A, gun owners, gun makers, the NRA, hunters, etc.
We’re getting bashed hard on every level and every direction. The president promised us his undying allegiance. But, as soon as the heat was turned up he flopped over. Gave the Communists all they wanted.
NRA? Same thing. Gave up bump stocks immediately. Wegun owners keep losing more and more ground all the time. It is way overdue time for the firearms industry – from manufacturers to retailers of guns and ammo and all accessories need to come together, form a solid coalition that wields a mighty fist of power.
That is the only way that we will keep what we have. And if the mfg’s want to sell more related stuff, they’re going to have to invest a little time and money to grow their shrinking market field.

  16. One comment regarding this statement from the article:

“Firearms-owning and liberty-minded citizens in a number of states are now back on the defensive against renewed attempts to infringe upon their firearms civil rights.”

A paramount step for all of us to take is to dispense with using terms such as “civil rights”, which are “rights” derived from Civil Law, and use the appropriate term regarding that which our US Constitution is designed to protect — our individual Natural Rights as derived from Natural Law, which no human (individual or collective) has just authority over.

In particular, we are addressing violations of our Natural Right to Self-Defense. Whenever illegal “gun regulations” are passed into law, we must recognize the fact that they ARE illegal because they violate that which the Law of the Land is supposed to protect.

  17. Guns in and of themselves possess neither good or evil but relies on the user to make that decision!!!! Period

  18. Equation; Gun Free Zones + Soft Targets= Mass Shootings. Gun control is not the answer, but Deterrence is. There were restricted areas at all the bases when I served in the USAF, and violations to area regulations would be met with DEADLY FORCE. When was the last time anyone tried to shoot up a police station? Again, any attempt will be met with Deadly Force.
And why aren’t there any stories on TV showing how responsible Armed Citizens have saved the lives of their Loved Ones, themselves and others because they were lawfully armed?
