A Democratic bill introduced in the House of Representatives this year aims to create a mandatory and publicly accessible registry listing the names of gun owners, how many guns they have, and even where they keep their firearms.
Additionally, the bill, H.R. 127, would ban several types of commonly used ammunition .50 caliber or greater, require gun owners to purchase firearm insurance costing $800 per year, and force those seeking to buy a gun to complete a psychological evaluation and a government training course prior to the purchase.
Should gun owners fail to adhere to the new restrictions, they could face an harsh penalty of 10 years in prison and fines of $50,000 to $150,000.
Sponsored by Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas), the bill is one of the most aggressive attempts yet by progressive lawmakers to curb Americans’ Second Amendment rights and is already drawing intense scrutiny from gun rights groups.
“All gun control bills share the same basic goal: a world in which fewer people own firearms,” the National Rifle Association wrote about the legislation. “Some bills simply ban certain types of firearms or ammunition outright. Others place obstacles in the path of owning firearms or ammunition to make them more difficult and expensive to obtain, thereby shrinking the market for them … H.R. 127 combines both failed approaches.”
“It bans common types of ammunition and original equipment magazines for most self-defense firearms. And, it makes all firearms more difficult to obtain and possess through a punitive licensing and registration scheme,” the group continued.
Speaking with the Washington Times, the leaders of several retired police officer groups also slammed the bill as a brazen attempt to curtail Second Amendment rights — and a hazardous one at that. Under the legislation, retired officers would not be exempt from the public registry.
“This is very dangerous, especially for retirees,” Kevin Hassett, president of the New York’s Retired Police Association, told the outlet. “Things have gone so downhill with this level of hostility towards cops and we are out there with the label that we are no longer cops. Retired cops don’t have partners or backup. We are out there on our own.”
Association of Retired Police Officers president Gerald G. Neill Jr. expressed concern that a registry would lead to the targeting of former cops.
“There is danger in having this as part of the public record,” he said.
While the bill has a long way to go before becoming law — it has no co-sponsors and has yet to be scheduled for a committee hearing — its mere introduction demonstrates the confidence of anti-gun lawmakers under the Biden administration and in a Democratic Party-controlled Congress.
“H.R. 127 is so outrageous, persecutory, and unworkable that its main function is simply to display the hostility of its author and supporters toward firearms, those who own them, and those who want to own them,” the NRA added in its blistering writeup.
Biden has yet to comment on Jackson Lee’s bill, but he appears set to make gun control a major issue of his presidency, as this week he called on Congress to enact “commonsense” reforms such as banning “assault weapons.” The White House has not ruled out using executive authority to push Biden’s gun control agenda.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians,
unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped
in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting
thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring
a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US
politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and
Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.
The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the observation in response to
podcast host Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’
Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures in the world
Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states,
while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a
similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed
by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot,
who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate
– carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of
Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes
away from the two traditional parties of Labor and
the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have
12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.
Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent
to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister
Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have
been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional
‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his
seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with
this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was
first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.
Maverick independent Bob Katter has just celebrated 50 years in parliament (pictured: being congratulated by
prime minister Anthony Albanese)
Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the
south-west Sydney seat of Fowler.
And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades
in federal parliament as the MP for the regional
far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the
years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to
build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the
highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily
on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris
and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated
ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020
by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while
they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”
Une pancarte barrée du slogan “L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse”, à Tucson, en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024
Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights,
Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable
fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted,
particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.
Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024
“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college
student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country
from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,”
he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain,
arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border
police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering
an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.
Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April
18, 2024
But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for
the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with
the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support
and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny
Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump
back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also
raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot
question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said
John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration,
specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered
in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”
Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker:

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur
Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn),
faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.
Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the
movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said:
‘It’s the worst film ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like,
‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds
of people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage!
Nihilism! All these think pieces.

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady
Gaga tap dancing to a point where it’s insane.’
He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and
we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is
going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve
ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top
spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie
and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical
element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as
a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements
were a lot of fun.’

One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more
interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’
It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to
Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the furore over the film, insiders claim.
Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under
$40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.
Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel,
aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the best
actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the
Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after the
response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for
the DC comics fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to
move on this from as quickly as possible.’

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed
she is not letting it deter her from returning to the big
screen, with the singer said to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.
‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.
‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a success
and Joaquin won an Oscar.
‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next
and final film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she
wants to audition.
‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is
presented, it is a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice
analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two
thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025,
as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to
a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the
world’s largest market for nicotine products, and
had been expecting it from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday
that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four
cities in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch would only
come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it
from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial
launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases,
he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding
this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said,
adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating
outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume
targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there
in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by Emma Rumney in London and Granth Vanaik in Bengaluru; additional

Lady Gaga was praised by co-star Joaquin Phoenix over her ‘impressive’ weight loss for their
latest flick.
The 38-year-old singer was recognized by her 49-year-old co-star – who revealed he ‘almost
lost his mind’ due to his diet – during a press conference for Joker: Folie à
Deux at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday.
Joaquin was discussing his personal weight loss for the original 2019 film
before praising the Poker Face hitmaker whose real name is Stefani Germanotta.
He said: ‘Stefani also lost a lot of weight.
‘I remember when I first met you in rehearsals and then you went away
for like a month and then you came back, you lost a lot of weight.’

The Oscar-winner continued praising Gaga as he added:
‘It was really impressive. It seemed very difficult.’

Joker
The admiration was mutual between the stars as Joaquin plays Arthur Fleck AKA The Joker and Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzil AKA Harley Quinn .
Gaga told her co-star: ‘I think we transformed into our characters over a period of time and we continued to hone in every kind of detail.’
The last time that actor Joaquin played The Joker, he had to drop
over forty pounds (three and a half stone). He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and
apples which he said made him almost lose his mind.
Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning role again in Joker: Folie a Deux – and says that he had to lose almost
the same amount of weight once more, and is never doing it again.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of the diet, because I
just think nobody wants to hear that.
‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was
so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t
have last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re right, I’m
now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it
for me.’

The last time that actor Joaquin Phoenix played The Joker, Arthur Fleck, he had to drop three
and a half stone – and he has revealed he had to do so again
He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about it, but it’s difficult to do so.
‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the entire time to get
to a certain weight.
‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds like an actor going on and
on about how much weight they lost.
‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and angry at myself for making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what you’re ****ing supposed to do.
So this time I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that’.’
He then whispered: ‘It was 47 pounds,’ before adding: ‘No, I’m joking.
I don’t know.’
Co star Lady Gaga, who plays a music therapist at Arkham Asylum,
said: ‘We rehearsed the waltz in the film for two months which kind of falls apart.
‘When Joaquin was too hungry we fed him blueberries.’
Phoenix said: ‘Part of the joy for me was to take standards and find
a way that was specific to the characters.
‘That was part of what was interesting for us.
We started off with references like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr
and we started to emulate that sound.’

Joaquin said of the weight loss this time round

He added that his co-star Lady Gaga, real name Stephanie Germanotta ‘wanted to sing live and I did not.
In the end, every part of the recording was live.’
Gaga said: ‘The way music is used is to give characters a way to
express themselves because the dialogue is not
enough.’
She had to forget her professional training: ‘It was about unlearning technique and
forgetting how to breathe.’
Director Todd Phillips said that he felt the pressure after the
success of The Joker.
He said: ‘I’m more nervous of this one than the first one.
The first one we were under the radar, this one everyone was writing on the internet about it.’
The Warner Bros film is released on October 4th.
After the release of the first film, Joaquin shut down rumours he only ate an apple a
day to achieve his astonishing weight loss, telling Access Hollywood that he consumed more food
than that — though not much more.
‘It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and steamed green beans,’ he said of what he ate
in preparation for the role.
The actor previously admitted that ‘you start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of time’
While speaking with Access Hollywood, Joaquin explained
he consulted with a doctor to ensure he lost weight as safely as possible
Although Joaquin has lost weight for roles before, he admitted
that ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips didn’t make it easy on him.
The Her star recalled how the producer always had the one food item he craved
on hand, which made his diet a bit more of a struggle.
‘Todd did have these f*****g pretzels that I love.
And he’d just have bags of them in his office!’ he said.
‘And that was difficult.’
Joaquin’s character is wearyingly thin in the film, and he admitted that he had
reservations about taking on such a drastic weight loss.
‘It’s a horrible way to live,’ he told the New York Times.
‘I think [the Joker] should be kind of heavy. Todd was like, ‘I think
you should do the real thin person.”
Joaquin previously said his extreme diet helped him prepare for the role in more
ways than one.
‘The first thing for us was the weight loss — I think that’s really what I
started with,’ he said of working with the film’s
director.
‘And, as it turns out, that then affects your psychology.
You start to go mad when you lose that amount of
weight in that amount of time.’
