John Paul Stevens, a justice of the Supreme Court from 1975 to 2010, wrote an interesting book, “Six Amendments” which included a study of the Second Amendment. To review a little background, on April 19, 1775, with the British troops marching toward Concord, Massachusetts, to take away the muskets from the troublesome colonists, the colonists rose instead to the occasion and thus started the Revolutionary War. With the Constitution and Amendments enacted in 1789, the concern that a national standing army might pose a threat to the security of the separate states led to the adoption of the Second Amendment: “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” It was understood that the right to bear arms was limited to military purposes.
For more than 200 years after the revolution, until 1986, no Supreme Court justice expressed any doubt about the interpretation of the Second Amendment. Then, organizations like the NRA started a vigorous campaign to change the interpretation to sell guns. It created the carnage that we see today.
Please contact your senators and representatives and ask them to enact common-sense legislation that would put restrictions on gun ownership to stem the senseless violence and death that are becoming so common that we as a society are now numb and mute.
