Ohio’s new law allowing adults to carry concealed firearms without training classes or background checks goes into effect June 12.
Gov. Mike DeWine signed the measure on Monday, which marks one of the most significant changes to Ohio gun policy and something gun rights groups have lobbied for more than 20 years.
“The NRA commends Gov. DeWine for signing this important piece of legislation that protects the Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding Buckeyes,” said Jason Ouimet, executive director of the NRA’s lobbying arm, in a statement Monday.

A long list of groups opposed the change, including the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio and several county sheriffs. Democrats condemned DeWine’s decision to sign Senate Bill 215, which will take effect in 90 days.
Ohio first passed a concealed carry weapons permit law in 2004. Since then it’s been enormously popular and Ohio lawmakers have shaved down training requirements and expanded places where permitholders may carry.
The new law eliminates the need for a permit unless the gun owner wants to carry a concealed weapon in other states. Ohio has reciprocity agreements with more than three dozen states.
