Op-Ed: The 2nd Amendment protects from the government | Opinion

Second Amendment

“Gun control means control for the government so government can control the people.” – Luke Scott

On April 19,1775, In Concord at dawn, the church bells signaled the colonists to grab their muskets and rush to the North bridge. A troop of 800 British soldiers had been ordered to seize their arms. Soon, 150 Minutemen blocked the path of the British troops and the first shot was fired that kindled the American Revolution for the right to bear arms to protect the colonists from their government.

In medieval England, the law required landowners to have weapons and serve in their baron’s militia. But as new religious and politics emerged, the government limited the kind of weapons people could own. By 1328, Parliament banned people from carrying arms in public. But in 1689, the English Bill of Rights gave back gun rights to Protestants and denied them to Catholics.

The colonists learned the importance of bearing arms during the revolution. Citizen militias were the colonies’ first defense against the British before Congress was able to organize and train the Continental Army. After the Revolution, the colonists demanded they remain armed or they would not ratify the Constitution. They wanted guns to protect them from a government they didn’t trust.

The right to bear arms was engrained in the English Bill of Rights. It granted all people the right to bear arms except Catholics. In 1788, George Mason, author of Virginia’s Declaration, defined a “militia as all the people, except for a few public officers.” That set the precedent for the Supreme Court when it ruled that gun ownership must be consistent with the nation’s “historical tradition.”

When our founders drafted the Constitution, they felt that all citizens should be prepared to protect themselves against government and any other threat to their freedom. It granted citizens that right to defend themselves and their property since owning guns in the 1700s was a necessity. It was a tool to slaughter livestock and feed and defend their families,. A man without a gun could not survive.

The colonists often found themselves at the mercy of highwaymen, gun slingers, thieves and bad guys who saw farmers and retail merchants as fair game. In the cities, women carried small caliber guns in their purses. Those in rural areas had a single shot Sharps rifle hidden behind the door.

Our founders knew that a gun was an important tool for the colonists. It was a tool to support life, not to tike life. Above all, it brought security and serenity to men and women who fled tyrannical governments. “To stop a bad guy with a gun, it takes a good guy with a gun.” – Wayne LaPierre.

Throughout the centuries, the role guns play in our society have been altered but not changed dramatically. Those in rural areas rely on them to put food on the table and keep dangerous critters at bay. Many citizens today are hobbyists who either belong to shooting range gun clubs or go hunting for recreation.

Yes, some things never change. As it was in medieval England, years later, bad guys use guns to commit crimes. Progressives say tax them, take them, ban them, regulate them and outlaw them after every shooting. But those shootings would happen anyway since bad guys always have guns. Look at Chicago? They have the strictest gun laws in the U.S. and the most violent crime rate too.

“To end violence in our communities, we need to control and restrict gun ownership.” – Joe Biden

The Jan. 6 protests were a walk in the park compared to what could happen in our nation if Congress were to disarm all honest licensed gun owners. It is that group of Americans who know their history and see their guns not as weapons to kill people but to protect their rights as citizens.

For centuries, rogue regimes have restricted gun ownership to control and conquer civilizations. In his book about guns, head of the NRA Wayne LaPierre wrote, “In Germany, Jewish extermination began with Hitter’s Nazi Weapon Law. It outlawed Jews from owning guns and all weapons. Hitler forced all Jews to register their guns and the result was the Holocaust that gassed 6 million Jews!”

Progressives claim the 2nd Amendment is for “military service” only. The huge flaw in that logic is our founders knew that guns were tools Americans used and needed in their daily lives. After the Revolution, the colonies feared an all powerful government and demanded the power to control it if it got out of hand – much like the progressives have done to America today. Like Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini and others did to control the people, the first thing they did was to take away their guns.

The debate about gun control is a “non-debate” since few people understand the 2nd Amendment gave the people the right to own guns not to kill each other but for us to protect ourselves from rogue conclaves. “Gun control is not about crook control. It’s about American control.” – Derrick Grayson

When progressives seek to disarm America, their objective is to limit any resistance they might encounter when they attempt to usurp the rights of the states and spread the wrath of federalism.

According to the Declaration of Independence, the only legitimate governments are those with the consent of the governed. When a government becomes the enemy and not the defender of human rights, the people can withdraw their consent and establish a new government whenever they wish. There are clauses similar to this in every independent state Constitution that clearly reiterate this.

Lord Byron once said, “Our leaders must never forget, they are guests in our house.” The people elect party hacks to watch over their government and run it according to their wishes, not those of a party. Electing politicians, not patriots to govern our nation makes us subjects instead of citizens.”

Subjects are subservient to their masters’ wishes while citizens are masters of their own destinies.

The NRA reports guns prevent over 2.5 million crimes a year, or 6,849 every day. Most often, the gun is never fired, and no blood is shed. Over 400,000 life-threatening violent crimes are prevented every year using firearms and 60% of criminals said they avoided committing crimes when a victim was armed. Fewer than 1% of all firearms are used in the commission of a crime. Yet that same group said they’d use a firearm to defend their nation! That’s the true intent of the 2nd Amendment.

America was founded by patriots with guns. You can’t defend democracy without guns. Knowing the long, sordid history of gun control in America is key to understanding the dangers of disarming the people. Without guns, we can only watch Nero fiddle while America burns like Rome in 64 AD.

“Besides the advantage of arming the people, our militia is highly trained to form a barrier against the enterprises of ambition and abuse more insurmountable than any government of any form will ever admit to. America is a safe secure nation because it is a well armed nation.” – James Madison
