The Republican Party and fundamentalist Christians that are bent on running the country are adamantly opposed to right to die laws because they fervently believe in the sanctity of life. They claim similar moral justification regarding a woman’s right to choose, disparaging the difficult choice to terminate a pregnancy, often referring to the mother as a criminal who should be punished, in some cases with the death penalty. Failing utterly to see the irony, they consider themselves dedicated crusaders for the right to life.
But rip up an elementary school classroom or a church and the children in it with an AR-15 (or a shotgun in this case) and the sycophants and snake handlers don’t offer much beyond “hopes and prayers” that have reliably enthralled the gullible for centuries and still in parts of the United States. That the kids who were killed, wounded or had their childhoods stolen last week in Minneapolis were already immersed in prayer was immaterial to evangelical hate mongers who seized the opportunity to politicize the shooting with a somewhat updated spew of biblical misinterpretations.
