The U.S. has had more mass shootings than any other country. The rate of active shooter incidents and mass shootings has tripled since 2011.
The innocent children were slain with bullets from high powered weapons. The government offered “thoughts and prayers.”
People of color were victims of gun violence. The protesters demanded justice so the government increased its police presence and supplied rifles and other weapons. This was a fight fire with fire response.
Shooters came to the malls, clubs, workplaces and other public venues, shooting down anyone in their sight. Mental illness was blamed.
Gun slingers came and fired on the church goers and the children saying prayers. The government responded with background checks for people purchasing guns.
Gun touters came for the politicians, in their homes and as they spoke at rallies. They blamed opposing parties.
How can we protect the fundamental unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness stated in the U.S. Declaration of Independence when gun control remains an issue? Do these inalienable rights override a Second Amendment right?
The NRA is a powerful lobby, purchasing the non-action of political leaders while the people scream for action.
And so, the Second Amendment, which refers to a well-regulated militia, has not been breached, has not been amended to define what constitutes a well-regulated militia and who should have the right to bear arms. Nor are restrictions in place regarding the kinds of guns one may purchase or where guns may be used.
The argument that guns keep us safe because of our Second Amendment right to bear arms falls short. As Reverend Dr. Mark Sandlin has stated: “If guns made us safe, America would be the safest nation on earth. Look around. It isn’t. We need sensible gun control laws now.”
