Don Rogers: Ripple effects from Ukraine

Second Amendment

[ad_1]

In Ukraine now, AK-47s are handed out like candy.

Babushkas and kids, moms and dads, students and soldiers have taken up arms to battle overwhelming odds. Kyiv yet stands. Their leader hasn’t left.

They have weathered worse than this latest invasion. Seven million Ukranians died in World War II and 4 million during Joseph Stalin’s reforms that led to famine.

The vision of citizens fighting in the streets for their country touches an American mythology we know well through our Westerns and Revolutionary War tales.

We marvel at their courage, their doggedness under fire, their conviction taking up arms in testament to the original intent of our own 2nd Amendment, a “militia being necessary” …

});

});

We’re mortified from the safety of our living rooms, lit blue, oceans between us and that “genius” Vladimir Putin and his stormtroopers.

Those invincible Russians have yet to cow the Ukranians, who have at least slowed an army eight times their size and promise a tough insurgency ahead in the defense of democracy. The cost will be dear.

For our part, well, we’ll pay more for gas.

BANG BANG

Americans seeing validation in widespread gun ownership might check the statistics. Before now, Ukraine ranked 88th in the world with enough private firearms for one of every 10 civilians.

The United States is the big outlier in private gun ownership, with 5% of the world population owning 40% of the weaponry. We have more guns than people, enough for 1.2 of these weapons for every man, woman, child.

Second place trails way, way behind at 6.2 guns per 10 citizens in the Falkland Islands, of all places. Then Yemen at 5.2 and on down from there. Switzerland checks in at 19th with 2.8 and progressive idyll New Zealand at 20th, with 2.6 of every 10 citizens possessing a firearm. Taiwan rounds out this list at 230th, with statistically zero weapons per capita. This according to the Small Arms Survey, part of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

Yet we rank only second to Brazil in sheer number of people shot to death each year, around 45,000. For gun murders per capita, Latin American countries easily squeeze us out of the top 10. We’re No. 2 per capita to Greenland in fatally shooting ourselves.

As any well-versed member of the NRA will tell you, though, guns don’t kill. So the question hangs: Would Americans have the stomach for what Ukraine’s exceptional citizens have taken on?

TELLING LIES

This is far from the first fake news war. Propaganda aimed at shaking up the enemy no doubt has been with humanity since we learned to speak. In world wars, planes from all sides bombed countrysides and cities with leaflets as well as bombs. It is far more intense and timely now through social media.

But Russia’s vaunted disinformation has been derailed along with that convoy with ample doses of truth this time around. American and NATO intelligence called out Putin’s moves before he could carry them out.

The world outside can plainly see the lies perhaps never so clearly nor quickly, and certainly Ukranians know this war up close and personal.

Russians at home get a whole ’nother story between the country shutting down feeds and state media following the state script. Sad stories are coming out of Ukraine about family members in Russia who don’t believe them about what’s happening. Of course Russian soldiers would never lob shells at civilians, who after all are the targets of Nazi genocide under the thumb of their president (who happens to be Jewish).

And we think we suffer from a Big Lie?

SHAKEUP?

How might our politics change through Ukraine? This has been a little delicate for the Republican Party and conservative pundits, until very recently apologists for Putin.

The pivot is on full feather from derision of the current president allegedly making too much of the threat of Russian invasion to painting pictures of not doing enough to keep it from happening. Chicken hawks are scrabbling and squawking now to the front of the hardest line.

That RINO Mitt Romney does look like a savant with his assessment in 2012 about the world’s No. 1 military threat, and the wing fluffing up for the ex-president, still enamored with Putin even as the assault began, seems a little lost at the moment.

Hard to imagine, but Ukraine could very well tip the congressional midterm elections back the Democrats’ way. That would be akin to a butterfly’s wings in one part of the world causing a hurricane in the other.

THEMATIC

These observations all wrap into one final image, at least for me, in the wake of a former aide of the ex and perhaps future president retweeting Russian disinformation that Zelensky had fled Kyiv and Ukraine.

“I need ammunition, not a ride,” Ukraine’s president retorted to an offer of help to escape.

That’s what I’m thinking about while filling the tank.

  10. Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind
à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter
sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair
Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island
in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with
multiple colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier
Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe
staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose
jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle
    designs.

    Kensington Palace

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard
over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple,
and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans,
black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the
festive season at private members’ club in London last
    year.

A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for
AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a
little out of your budget, there are countless options on the high street.
The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our attention, as did the Fair Isle knit
that was featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.

  11. Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’ about him enjoying an exclusive and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense exchange with
    a journalist live on radio.

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and services handed
out by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free
hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make
their own judgement about what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid
pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers
    Union.

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’
in a Facebook post. ‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be
a little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters
such as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations
heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

How Greens leader Adam Bandt spent thousands on private jet flights while lecturing YOU about climate change

Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying business class from Melbourne to Canberra seated next to
    Senator Jacqui Lambie.

Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King were on the same flight but were with the masses in economy class.

It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts to frequently fly business despite
his party’s core policy of cutting C02 emissions.

Flying business class emits about three times as
much carbon as economy class because the seats take up more room and more of them are
empty, according to a World Bank study.

Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had shunned a Chairman’s Lounge membership and refuses
    to travel business class.

Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.

Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after it was revealed he frequently
opts for business class and has even taken private jets to election events

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill.

One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March
7 but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend
    his party’s election campaign launch.

Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being
asked if he has included both his son and partner as ‘plus
    one’ Chairman’s Club members.

He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international
one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto
their two seats after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to
have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per
    cent swing to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which
has seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the
company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes
    with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers, state
premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas
ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures
    and high-profile media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane,
Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and
marble flooring all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a
complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines.
Wine bottles are often given as departing gift

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight
is to board and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.
Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

  13. March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options
to exit the Russian market, citing a complex
and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from
Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products
and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated
tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices,
as well as related investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended
its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its
Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the
