Attorney General Pam Bondi has tapped former federal prosecutor Ed Martin to lead criminal investigations into mortgage fraud allegations against Sen. Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday appointed Ed Martin as special prosecutor to oversee separate grand jury probes in Maryland and Virginia targeting allegations of mortgage fraud by Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Bondi has already issued subpoenas and impaneled a grand jury as part of a broader criminal investigation into multiple allegations involving the state of New York. One line of inquiry is whether James and state officials pursued a lawsuit against the National Rifle Association in violation of its First and Second Amendment rights.
The Albany Times-Union reported in May that the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany opened a formal criminal probe into James after a referral from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte. In a letter to Bondi, Pulte alleged James “falsified records” to secure a home loan on a Virginia property she declared as her principal residence in 2023 while serving as New York’s top prosecutor. James has dismissed the accusations as “baseless.”
Schiff is also reportedly under federal investigation for allegedly falsifying mortgage documents to obtain favorable loan terms, following a separate criminal referral from the FHFA to the Department of Justice. Last month, President Donald Trump said Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division possessed evidence implicating Schiff and declared he “needs to be brought to justice.” Schiff has denied any wrongdoing.
Weeks before the special prosecutor’s appointment, Trump had called for James to resign over questions surrounding her real estate dealings. Bondi’s move to name Martin—whose prior nomination to serve as the top federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., was withdrawn in May after opposition from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.)—signals the Justice Department is escalating both cases.
The investigations are expected to proceed in parallel, with the Maryland grand jury handling the Schiff matter and the Virginia panel focusing on the case against James.
