Blur your eyes and don’t look too long. You could swear that New York Congressman Max Rose is a hard-MAGA Right-winger who hammers Left-wing hacks.
“I stood with President Trump when Democrats attacked him for killing an Iranian terrorist,” Rose announced in a TV ad. “Because when you kill American soldiers, we kill you.” Rose’s face shared a split screen, to the right of Donald J. Trump’s stern photo. Rose added, pointing his finger emphatically: “I don’t give a d**n about the polls, the parties, or the politics. It’s country first for me.”
“When Bill de Blasio tried to defund the police, I stood up and said it was 100% wrong,” Rose said in the same commercial for his re-election bid today. “Bill de Blasio is the worst mayor in the history of New York City,” Rose declared in another TV spot. He then stood on a sidewalk in silence for five seconds. “That’s it, guys,” he continued. “Seriously. That’s the whole ad.”
Rose represents all of Staten Island plus a hipster’s goatee of square miles dangling from Brooklyn’s chin. In November 2016, Rose’s neighbors Made New York’s 11th District Great Again. They voted 53% for Trump versus 44% for Hillary Clinton.
Today, Marist reports, Trump leads Biden among NY-11’s likely voters, 53% to 46%.
Don’t let the incumbent’s rough-and-tough ads and conservative voter base fool you. “MAGA Max Rose” is anything but. A variety of congressional-performance reviews expose Max Rose as a far-Left Democrat who wouldn’t know the middle of the road if he straddled the yellow line on Henderson Avenue.
Heritage Action gives Rose a 6% rating, with zero flush-Left and 100 flush-Right. By comparison, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., earned 16%, more than double Rose’s result.
ProPublica found Max Rose in near-lock step with another Max.
He and Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., voted together 93% of the time.
Rose is even more closely allied with another key House member: Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. ProPublica also reports that Max Rose votes with Nancy Pelosi 96% of the time.
These numbers do not scream, “moderate Democrat.”
Max Rose also does terribly with letter grades.
The National Rifle Association’s latest congressional report gave Rose an F.
The National Taxpayers Union also handed Max Rose an F.
Indeed, NTU also gave him a 7 % rating. By that same measure, AOC earned a D and 29%. According to the National Taxpayers Union’s considered judgment, Max Rose is four times more fiscally irresponsible than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Based on these surveys of his legislative record, Max Rose is the most liberal member of Gotham’s congressional delegation. Thus, voters in NY-11 should ask themselves how they let Staten Island become New York City’s most left-wing borough.
Max Rose’s military record is highly distinguished.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2010.
He was wounded in Afghanistan and earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He remains in the National Guard and deployed last spring as part of the Trump administration’s robust response to the coronavirus.
Max Rose deserves every American’s deep respect and profound gratitude for his loyal service to this country. But these days, Congressman Rose is less a soldier or even a politician. He is a fine actor. He has spent the last two years portraying a centrist Democrat in Staten Island while performing as a far-Left Democrat in Washington.
Thankfully, there is an alternative to “The Max Rose Show.”
State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, R – Staten Island, is running hard for the U.S. House against Rose. While others, including scores of eligible Republicans sat on their hands, Malliotakis was brave enough to step up in 2017 and run against de Blasio for mayor of New York.
While she did not prevail, she outperformed de Blasio’s previous opponent, Joe Lhota, whose general-election campaign was as invisible and harmless as nitrogen.
More important, she won 67% for mayor within NY-11. This speaks loudly to Malliotakis’ name ID and popularity within this R plus 3 constituency, particularly after her four successful state-legislative campaigns.
Malliotakis has been endorsed by the Log Cabin Republican Club, New York State Patriots for Life, the National Federation of Independent Business, the New York Post, and a parade of police unions.
“Ending bail. Closing Rikers [Island, a local jail]. Defunding the police. What are Max Rose and Bill de Blasio thinking?” Malliotakis asks in one TV ad. “Fewer cops on the street may be great for violent criminals. But it’s outright dangerous for the rest of us.”
Among her accomplishments, Malliotakis cites stopping de Blasio’s attempted destruction of Gotham’s specialty high schools and the Gifted and Talented Program and securing permanent sales-tax-free status on apparel purchases below $100.
She also fought for new rules that yank pensions from elected officials convicted of crimes.
Rather than two more years of “The Max Rose Show,” Nicole Malliotakis is thisclose to bringing the curtain down on her opponent’s stirring one-man production.
Instead, Malliotakis would give NY-11 exactly what it deserves: a reliable Republican vote in the House and one more impediment to the plots and plans of Pelosi and the radical Democrats.
