Second Amendment

Holiday event marred by vulgar shirt

Last weekend we attended a family-themed holiday event up in Lee County. It felt great to, once again, join in with others after last year’s loss of sharing in the season due to COVID.

It was fine until an adult male appeared wearing a shirt with a vulgar expletive, spelled out in military grade weaponry, above the name of the president of the United States. We were at a loss to grasp why a middle class looking person would not want safer bridges and increased opportunities for health care, but he is entitled to his views.

What we could not fathom was how he thought it was okay to don such foul apparel, then parade it past the line of innocent children, eagerly awaiting their turn to see Santa.

About that warranty…

Perhaps as a balance to all the political/pandemic rhetoric I offer my comments on the subject of warranties and service.

My favorite broker for car transport has given it up, says too many issues of promises made and not kept.

My own experience with a “home warranty” company suggests they have no real intention of being of service. In a four-year contract I have had six claims. Four were disallowed for “prior condition” or “we don’t cover tanks,” the other two they just never responded to.

My neighbor has an $80,000 new car and bought the tire warranty. Trying to get an adjustment on a claim resulted in two dealers unable to come to grips, finally gave up and paid the $600.

We hear frequently about home repair/remodeling contractors taking deposits and never returning, air conditioning companies that seem to always tell you the system is shot and needs complete replacement.

My own local car dealer where we have bought three new cars, has changed ownership, put a three-level intercept on his phone system which almost always guarantees you will get transferred to another intercept, told to leave a message and never get a call back.

But I do hear almost daily from Calvin from Calcutta who wants to help me with my car warranty, my credit card qualifications for loans, or his friend from the “Police Association.”

I am certain we all have our examples. It’s a sad testimonial to the state of business we rely on. Most of it seems backwards in not hearing from the people we need and rely on, but hearing frequently from those we have no need of nor interest in.

Governor’s spending priorities

When will someone ask the governor where all the money will come from for his political moves of $5,000 for unvaccinated law enforcement officers from other states to move to Florida, $1,000 bonuses for teachers and raising salaries for them and first responders. Now he wants to start a State Guard, not the Army National Guard we have now. This would be like a private military unit that only reports to him. The first responders deserve the raises but I believe this should be done over a period of time, not when the governor is running for re-election with an eye towards president in 2024.

Pleading the Fifth about Jan. 6

One has to hand to Nancy Pelosi; she’s sharp as a tack. I believe one motivating factor behind the Jan. 6 Commission was to get Trump supporters and associates to invoke the protections granted by the Fifth Amendment. Now please remember, Trump himself often stated: Only guilty people like the Mafia take the Fifth. Google it if you doubt my word. Now, many like myself believe taking the Fifth is a way to admit guilt, without admitting guilt! Now come the midterm elections! The first question will be: Do you support Trump’s associates pleading the Fifth when ask about their actions of Jan. 6? Do you agree with Republican members of Congress downplaying the events of Jan. 6? Forget policy questions. How can someone support the Jan. 6 attack and believe in election results?

Sanity replaces chaos

Thank you President Joe Biden for working to save our democracy by bringing honesty, ethical behavior and good governing back to the presidency. President Biden ended an unwinnable war, followed scientific recommendations to control a worldwide pandemic, greatly improved our employment status which was damaged by the pandemic, and implemented an infrastructure plan which has been needed for decades. It is so refreshing to have good governing as opposed to chaos. His administration has brought in honest, competent  and ethical leaders to implement his plans. How refreshing! Sanity is returning!

Freedom to endanger others

I can’t understand the far right Republicans’ rabid refusal to support mask and vaccine or test mandates to keep us safe.

What’s next? A Republican push to have all smoking bans in public buildings, restaurants and airplanes lifted? And those pesky seat belt laws have gotta go. And while we’re at it, let’s shore up the Second Amendment and allow our schoolchildren to protect themselves with a revolver packed in their lunchboxes next to their Twinkies.

Apparently, the lunatic fringe of Republicans feel that the freedom to be dangerous to others is as American as apple pie.

Idealism no match for dollars, idolatry

Up until this last year I was a news junkie and involved. I read and listened to news and opinion (I know the difference). I was an Occupy marcher and donor to causes and politicians I thought would make a better city, state, country and world.

Believing in governmental representation falls in the same category as belief in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. It really hurts to get to my age and have to admit it has taken so long to catch on to the reality of being snookered. Too soon old; too late smart.

I’m coming to admit to myself that I was just dog paddling in the wishing well. Ideals and idealism are no match against the dollars I will never have in sufficient quantity to buy votes.

Corporate money and the third rail idolatry protecting religion and the NRA will always hold our “representatives” in thrall.

And then there’s the problem of our undereducated overpopulation. I still have a pretty full-throated rant about that (for all the good it does).

Biden administration failures

Remember how vilified Trump was for his handling of the pandemic? Accusations like he didn’t take it seriously. He didn’t take action fast enough. He was xenophobic, a racist and a fearmonger when he did take action. He didn’t ramp up testing. He didn’t supply ventilators. He didn’t support masks. I could go on and on and at least in my opinion, it was the major reason that he lost the election to Biden. Biden was one of the vocal critics of Trump’s handling of the virus. Biden pledged that getting the virus under control was his first goal. Biden has had the benefit of the vaccine that even most on the Left would agree was a huge accomplishment under the Trump administration. During the Trump administration during the pandemic, the House was controlled by the Democrats. During the Biden administration, the Democrats have control of both houses. So, with that background, where are we today? The fact is that there have been more deaths during the Biden administration than during the Trump administration. So where are the attacks on Biden for his obvious failure on responding to the virus? This is just another example of the many failures of the Biden administration.
