With Huron County placed in a new state legislative district for the 2022 election, it now has its first declared candidate.
Greg Alexander, the current director of utilities and community development for Croswell, announced on Feb. 23 his plans to run as a Republican for the new 98th state representative seat. He previously ran for the former 83rd state representative district in 2020, currently held by Andrew Beeler.
“I was born and raised on a Sanilac County dairy farm, so I learned work ethic at a young age,” Alexander said. “I always had a heart for community service.”
While Alexander has sold his dairy cows, he currently runs Alexander Orchard LLC, a Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program verified farm in farmstead and cropping systems. The farm is currently seeking a forestry designation from MAEAP as well.
Alexander has been married to his wife for over 30 years and has three adult children, one of whom is a military veteran.
Alexander is involved with the Sandusky Optimist Club and the Sanilac County Fair Board, is a captain of the 4th degree for the Knights of Columbus Lexington chapter, and currently serves as a district deputy for the Saginaw Catholic Diocese.
He was also an employee for Tri-County Equipment for 15 years, which he said has helped him become familiar with agricultural needs and regulatory issues related to agriculture.
From 2009 to 2020, Alexander served for three terms as Sanilac County’s drain commissioner, where he had to manage all the county’s assets involving drains, rivers, and streams.
“It was to maintain the system for the health, safety, and welfare of residents,” Alexander said. “It’s a vital piece of infrastructure. It’s necessary not only for agriculture, but for the roads to exist. All roads are reliant upon that.”
Alexander said the reason he is running is that he does not feel that today’s leadership at the state and national level represents how the residents of the Upper Thumb feel. If elected, he plans on standing up for conservative principles, like being pro-life and pro-gun, and the traditional American heritage.
“As a three-time elected drain commissioner of Sanilac County, I understand that farmers understand the concept of investment versus reward,” Alexander said. “I feel a strong urgency to represent our core values that this country was founded upon.”
Alexander has also served as the chairman of the Sanilac County Board of Public Works, sat on the county’s landfill and recycling board, and was elected to the Karegnondi Water Authority, which oversaw the construction of a new pipeline to Flint during the Flint water crisis.
The new 98th state representative district Alexander will be running for was created in the state redistricting process that was approved in December, with Huron County going from a district that included all of Huron and Tuscola counties, to one that includes the eastern half of Tuscola County, the majority of Sanilac County, and the northernmost portion of Lapeer County. It put the area’s current state representative, Republican Phil Green, in a different district where he plans on running for re-election.
The 83rd district that Alexander previously ran for was made up of Sanilac County and the Port Huron area of St. Clair County. Had Alexander’s area not been redistricted the way it did, he would not have considered running again.
“Andrew (Beeler) is doing a good job where he is,” Alexander said. “He has the right morals and moral compass. He’s a Catholic, supports life, and is an NRA member.”
During his previous run, Alexander received an AQ rating from the NRA, a top A rating from the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners, and endorsements from the Michigan Realtors PAC, the Citizens for Traditional Values, former State Sen. Phil Pavlov, current State Sen. Kevin Daley, and former Congresswoman Candice Miller, with those three politicians he expects to get endorsements from again.
Alexander believes that with agricultural background, support for American farmers, understanding of regulatory restraints, and Christian morals and values, he hopes the residents of the new 98th State Representative District will consider voting for him.
“My grandchild lives within this new district,” Alexander said. “It’s important that we leave our grandchildren with the freedoms our country currently capitalizes on.”
The primary elections for the Nov. 2022 election will take place on Aug. 2.
