Second Amendment repeal needed before gun reform can take place

Second Amendment

Repeal the Second Amendment

Despite all the sound and fury, meaningful legislation to adequately control gun violence will never be passed until the Second Amendment is repealed. There is no need for it today because the Armed Forces and the National Guard no longer depend on members to bring their own weapons. Its final 14 words, on which the gun lobby’s arguments are based, cannot stand alone despite a misguided Supreme Court saying that they could back in 2008. The Second Amendment in its entirety reads: ‘A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.’ We all make mistakes, even Supreme Court Justices.

Civilians’ assault weapons unwarranted

Assault weapons are not needed by civilians — of any age. These are weapons for military use, after intense training only.

Gun reform needed in Florida

When will Floridians do something about our NRA-supported governor, senators and state legislative representatives and senators, both Republican and Democrat? Gov. DeSantis, Sens. Rubio and Scott, have continually passed or supported all the stands taken by the NRA, I do not think that the Second Amendment was written into the Constitution to support the use of military weapons by civilians on the streets of America. Do we have to wait for the child of one of our politicians to be killed to get any action in the form of legislation to limit and control guns. Hunters do not need automatic weapons. Eighteen-year-olds do not need weapons and yet our Governor and Legislature passes laws allowing the open carrying of such weapons. When will we support and vote only for candidates who support some gun control, whether Republican or Democrat? We should be electing candidates who refuse to be the pawns of the NRA.

Republicans going their own way

The Republicans want to ban a woman’s right to reproductive health care, books, gay rights, interracial marriage, contraception, peaceful protest. They support unlimited gun ownership, insurrection to overthrow the government, and punishing businesses that don’t agree with their position. There is a big distinction between the two political parties. Keep that in mind when you vote.

Actions deserve cartoon commentary

Kudos to the Post for the cartoons depicting Gov. DeSantis as a bigoted autocrat. This is no time to play nice with a fascist autocratic movement that has infected our Republican Party. I think gerrymandering districts in North Florida to dilute black votes, attacking trans kids’ liberty, altering how history is taught and limiting our children’s speech in Florida schools speaks for itself.

The Palm Beach Post has expanded its Letters to the Editor section today, due to the number of readers expressing outrage at both the Texas elementary school shooting and the continuous lack of action by elected officials to cur gun violence. The letters continue on the next page.
