How dumb are we? – Broomfield Enterprise

Second Amendment

By Betty Sue Harris

More than two centuries ago, the Supreme Court NEVER decided that the 2nd Amendment granted a constitutional right to individuals to bear arms. The widely-held notion that such a right existed was a myth fabricated by the National Rifle Association for its own self-interest and for the corporate profits of gun manufacturers. In 1991, Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger referred to the NRA’s 2nd Amendment myth as “one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat fraud, on the American people by a special interest group that I have seen in my lifetime”.

Retired Justice John Paul Stevens, at age 97, called for a more effective and more lasting reform of the 2nd Amendment. The long-serving justice led the March for Lives Rally organized by The Kids of the #Never Again Movement, survivors of the Feb. 14 Parkland shooting in 2018, calling for a repeal of the 2nd Amendment. The honorable justice suggested the wording, “a well-regulated militia being necessary to the free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms (when serving in the militia) shall not be infringed” in order to clarify its intent, which could invalidate the NRA, gun lobbyists and manufacturers fraudulent claims.

Just recently, Don Bongino said on Fox News, ” pretending that guns caused Texas school shootings is not being serious about the problem.” Bongino suggests that the anxiety caused by shutting down schools due to COVID and being told what to think and not to think, mental health issues, violent entertainment, video games and pure evil are the cause of so many mass shootings in America. But he doesn’t acknowledge or seem to comprehend that all over the world children, young males 18 years old, the mentally ill, the watchers of violent video games/entertainment and evil exist. The difference being, that only in America are guns, weapons of war and large rounds of ammunition easily accessible to the anxious and evil.

Let us STOP the blame games, such as the aforementioned. Let us stop saying “it is not the gun; it is the person.” Well, if that sick-and-or-evil person did not and could not have a gun, he/she could not kill with a gun. Let us make federal the now barely effective band-aids that some states have legislated into their laws, so that the deranged can no longer step over the border from a well-regulated state to a state like Texas or Pennsylvania, for example, that loosens regulations and encourages the ownership, buying and selling of weapons of war to 18-year-olds. An 18-year-old cannot rent a car in Texas, but can buy an assault weapon, multiple assault weapons even. It’s really dumb to give an 18-year-old easy access to an AR-15.

Let us attack the problem at its base, as the Senate refuses to even look at a gun control bill that has been lying in wait for more than a year. Why won’t they touch it? Because the all-powerful, wealthy, fraudulent NRA has lined their pockets! Let us STOP VOTING FOR POLITICIANS OF ANY PARTY THAT TAKE CAMPAIGN DONATIONS FROM THE NRA. We The People cannot expect a Senate controlled by the NRA to vote to ban assault weapons, to require federal background checks, to band large rounds of ammunition, to require a person to have a license to own a gun when they are beholden to the NRA for the money that bought their seat in the Senate.

In the 2016 election, the NRA spent $11,438,118 to support Donald Trump. Donated $19,756,346 to groups opposing Hillary Clinton, like the one that made up lies about a child trafficking operation in the basement of a pizza place that didn’t have a basement sending an armed man who believed the lie to kill the fake offenders. In the first half of 2019, the NRA spent $1.6 million lobbying Congress against passing gun safety legislation. In the 2016 election, the NRA flooded the cycle with $50 million in spending in races around the country. In 2020, the NRA spent $4.2 million on Trump’s campaign.

As I read with disgust and tears a list of letters from the 114 Republicans and one Democrat who had taken donations from the NRA and had the audacity to offer nothing more than “thoughts and prayers” to the families of the victims of the Parkland shooting, I became more and more disgusted and hopeless in the reality that nothing will change. Nothing has changed since Sandy Hook. Sadly, the largest cause of death among children will continue to be by guns.

The Rubios, the Cruzs, the Trumps, the Ernsts, the Hyde-Smiths, the DeSantis, the McCarthys, the Romneys, the Collins, to name a few who have taken millions from the NRA will continue to be on the take and vote according to the NRA’s bidding if we don’t vote them out. Alex Jones will continue to call the Sandy Hook mass shooting a hoax. Fox News will continue to allow the likes of Don Bongino, who will continue to blame the deaths of 19 innocent children and two teachers on anything but the fact that an angry/deranged 18-year-old could easily and legally purchase the assault weapons that took human lives. Yes, it was the person WITH A GUN that he should never have had access to that killed them all!

The founders of the NRA may (giving it credit where credit probably isn’t due) have started as a special interest group to protect your right to own a gun for hunting, protecting yourself from the militia, or protecting your property but has obviously morphed into an organization that supports greed, the manufacturing and possession of domestic terrorism weapons.

Please when you cast your next ballot for the sake of the innocent, young and old, put away your party affiliation, engage your heart, and think do I really want to vote for a candidate who is willing to sell their soul for a seat of power? Do I want to support domestic terrorism?

May civility, empathy, peace and the common good prevail in our hearts and minds as we cast our vote be it in a primary, local, state or federal election. Let us not be a nation of hate, division, deception, greed and a country where there is no safe place from gun violence. I want to say that we are better than that, but right now we are not!

Speaking of primaries, candidates that are ‘toat’n guns in their commercials are winning in some places. Still feel hopeful?
