In his March 1 newsletter to his constituents, Rep. Josh Heintzeman writes that HF 601 and HF 4300 would “erode the 2nd amendment” and “put the onus on the victim of a crime to file a report to law enforcement.” HF 601 states that an individual must report the theft of a firearm within 48 hours of the discovery of the theft. Representative Heintzeman’s message is confusing as one would think that if valuable property has been stolen one would want to file a report for insurance purposes. As for HF 4300, it deals with the safe storage and security of firearms in order to protect children and others. The NRA makes the exact same recommendations also and recommends keeping ammo in a separate location than the firearm. Why would a responsible gun owner not support these measures?
