Not my experience

Regarding Nancy Stewart’s letter to the editor Elder care poor (March 15).

I feel it is harsh to state hospital workers “are horrible and don’t care.”

In my three-year term at Victoria Hospital, I found the doctors, nurses, PSWs, physios, technicians, porters, and cleaners had tremendous compassion and dedication. Especially during the pandemic, when visitors were not allowed, the hospital staff did their utmost to provide care and comfort.

On the other hand, it was disheartening to see many family members visit a scant 15 minutes, and rarely touch or assist their loved ones. Might I suggest family members care for their relatives at home, with professional help, or would that be too costly and limiting to your vacation or other pursuits?

What’s to love?

As I read Charles Hutton’s letter to the editor Joining U.S. overdue (March 5) and wondered what the attraction was?

Is it that Americans embrace a convicted felon as their leader? A leader who revels in using bully tactics rather than reason?

Could it be the Christian nationalists who tout Project 2025, a racist, Handmaid’s Tale version of the American Dream, in lieu of personal freedoms and rights?

Perhaps it’s because it is a society that lives by the gun and allows the vulnerable to be terrorized in support of the NRA and the 2nd amendment. Or is it because their level of health care is determined by how big a cheque one can write?

I have a solution for Hutton: move to the U.S. and don’t let the door slam on your way out.

Love letter from U.S.

As appalled as Canadians must be by the actions of President Donald Trump, imagine how it feels to be an American having this dangerous man representing us.

Please know we love you guys and love your remarkable nation, and try to find it in your hearts to forgive us.

I look forward to the day when we can look back on all this over a crisp Canadian beer and exchange hugs and handshakes.

Change plane plan

In view of the Americans changed attitude toward our country, I wonder if it is time for our air force to react?

Instead of the planned purchase of the F-35 from Lockheed Martin, perhaps our interests would be better served buying the SAAB Gripen from Sweden.

Growing up

Canada has discovered patriotism. After basking in the era of peace following the Second World War, we have been too trusting, too admiring of the “beacon on the hill.”

It’s time to stand on our own. Canada can do it, because we have done it before. We manufactured thousands of warplanes in the Second World War and we can do it again. Canada has to show we can be a land of peace and also a country of strength.
