In the wake of the tragic and brutal murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley, many women have taken to carrying guns while they partake in the exercise. The trend has spawned numerous videos on TikTok and has since gone viral.

From some women doing a little dance to music before flashing a gun tucked into the side of their joggers to one person stating she was open carrying in her neighborhood, each video urges all women to bring a gun with them when they go anywhere alone.

“For all the people saying I that I should be concealed carrying while I am on my run,” Mikaela Dieppa said in a TikTok posted earlier this month. ” I would just like to say that you’re probably not a female who has men slow down and stop to watch them.”

“When I am open carrying, she adds. “Those people will slow down, look at me, see that I am open-carrying and quickly drive on by. So that is why I will keep open carrying on my run.”

The decision for more women to carry guns on their runs was praised by professional shooter and former police officer Dianna Muller while at the National Rifle Association meeting on Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia. “I think it’s important for all women to be able to have the decision to carry, whether that be open or concealed,” she told the Irish Star. “Gun-free zones kill.”

While speaking with The Star, Muller, 42, stated that she preferred the concealed carry method. Muller is also the CEO and founder of Women for Gun Rights, “because I believe that education is the key to firearm safety and violence prevention, and that we are our own first responders.”

The Oklahoma native served 22 years on the Tulsa Police Department, serving assignments in Narcotics, Gangs, Street Crimes, and Patrol before retiring from the force and taking up shooting competitively. “I was a police officer for 22 years in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I know exactly how long it took me to get to you if you were in need.”

“So I encourage all citizens to be able to defend themselves, whether that be with a jujitsu, a knife, or a firearm,” she added. “The Second Amendment and the firearm is the great equalizer, especially for women, and levels the playing field.”

During her conversation with the Star, Muller praised the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump, who signed the Laken Riley Act days after assuming office for his second term. “I think that what happened to Laken Riley was horrific, and I think that’s what needs to happen,” she said. “We need to be a little bit more strict on our border and on securing our country.”

The act, which was signed on January 29, 2025, requires the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to detain illegal immigrants admitting to, charged with, or convicted of theft-related crimes, assaulting a police officer, or a crime that results in death or serious bodily injury, like drunk driving. The act serves as an amendment to the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.

Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, was murdered while jogging on the University of Georgia campus on February 22, 2024

Her killer, Jose Ibarra, was found guilty of all 10 counts against him: one count of malice murder; three counts of felony murder; and one count each of kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with intent to rape, aggravated battery, obstructing an emergency call, evidence tampering and being a peeping Tom.
