Elon Musk Exits Government Role, Criticizes Trump’s Spending Bill

news

United States: Elon Musk is relinquishing his federal duties, stepping away from the helm of the Department of Government Efficiency—abbreviated as DOGE—a brainchild meant to instill frugality within bureaucratic veins.

Yet, in a candid exchange airing this Sunday on *CBS Sunday Morning*, Musk unleashed sharp disapproval toward President Donald Trump’s self-praised “one big beautiful” fiscal measure, contending that it starkly undercuts the core purpose of trimming governmental excess.

“I find myself let down by this gargantuan expenditure bill,” Musk remarked. “Rather than reducing the red ink, it inflates the deficit balloon and topples the careful scaffolding DOGE’s been erecting.”

Since the prelude to Trump’s presidency, Musk had stood beside him, both men repeatedly vowing to carve down bloated federal outlays. However, the latest House-sanctioned spending package steers in the opposite direction—ballooning the national ledger by a staggering $4 trillion.

Trump, however, stood firm behind the legislation during midweek remarks in the Oval Office, arguing that political arithmetic required compromise.

“We need a mountain of votes,” he said. “No room for slashing right now—we need traction. I’m displeased by portions, yes, but elated by others.”

The legislation now advances to the Senate battleground, where Senators Ron Johnson (Wisconsin) and Mike Lee (Utah) have aligned with Musk’s fiscal skepticism, urging deeper cuts in return for their backing.

With GOP ranks teetering on a razor-thin margin—just four votes shy of collapse—the Senate echoes the House’s internal frictions.

Meanwhile, DOGE’s infamous savings tracker, oft ridiculed for its erratic accuracy, reports a claimed savings of \$175 billion. Though Musk’s original ambition hovered around the \$2 trillion mark, the goal was later tempered dramatically—slashed by over 90% to a mere \$150 billion.

Upon stepping away from his governmental post, Musk plans to immerse himself back into the ventures under his wing—Tesla, X, xAI, and SpaceX—many of which have shown signs of drift in his political detour.

Musk’s previous year has been consumed by political fervor—championing Trump, backing Republicans, and shepherding DOGE’s mandate. Despite having contributed roughly \$250 million during the last campaign cycle, Musk now signals a pullback from high-stakes political giving in the foreseeable future.
