Charlie Kirk’s quote on the 2nd Amendment is going viral after the tragic killing of the Minneapolis nurse on Saturday. Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old nurse, was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent in Minnesota. The video of the confrontation, and the subsequent shooting went viral quickly, causing outrage when tempers were already simmering over the Renee Nicole Good shooting at the hands of ICE agent, Jonathan Ross.
However, Pretti was carrying a firearm and the Donald Trump administration has claimed that the federal agent shot in self-defense. Videos contradict this narrative, and a CNN analysis showed that one of the agents had taken Pretti’s gun even before he was fired upon. Many within the Trump administration, including the president himself, rushed to slam Pretti for carrying a weapon.
F.A. United States Attorney Bill Essayli even controversially remarked “If you approach law enforcement with a gun, there is a high likelihood they will be legally justified in shooting you. Don’t do it!.”
This statement has drawn severe flak from the gun lobby including the NRA, which stated “This sentiment from the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California is dangerous and wrong. Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalizations and demonizing law-abiding citizens.”
Essayli’s statement is a gross violation of the 2nd Amendment, which says “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” X community users also added context about the 4th, and 14th amendments of the Constitution. They noted that Graham v Connor reaffirmed possessing a weapon is not an “imminent threat”, and that force must be reasonable.
Pretti was fired upon at least nine more times, after the first shot, CNN reported. Amid the outcry over the apparent attack on the 2nd Amendment, Charlie Kirk’s post from 2018 is going viral.
What had Charlie Kirk said
Kirk had written on X “The 2nd amendment is not for hunting, it is not for self protection. It is there to ensure that free people can defend themselves if god forbid government became tyrannical and turned against its citizens.”
Kirk remained a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and his statements had resurfaced after his own assassination by a gunman, who authorities identified as Tyler Robinson, on September 10.
Given the context, Kirk’s old post was shared multiple times today, including by the official House Democrats page, which remarked “Interesting.”
