Local NRA member condemns Pretti killing
The tragic murder of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by federal officers has opened my eyes to a massive divide in our country. Reviewing the incident on different sources and reading comments, I was appalled by people condoning this shooting. In years past, corruption found in some local law enforcement agencies, called for federal oversight to ensure safety and civil liberties of ALL Americans. Now 2026, it seems the federal police have become Hitler’s Brown Shirts reminiscent of 1930’s Germany. While I support immigration enforcement of people violating our laws, no police agency should be able to intimidate, attack and murder our citizens without legal review and if circumstances warrant, a trial and accountability. As a Life Member of the NRA and the California Rifle and Pistol Association and Certified Range Safety Officer, the people I know that have gone though the process of obtaining a Concealed Carry Permit have been good people. Reviewing videos of this incident appear to validate that Mr. Pretti was acting responsibly, had his hand in the air, other hand holding a phone, was retreating when a woman next to him was assaulted by the officer. Then he was pepper sprayed in the face and knocked to the ground, disarmed and shot multiple times. The Homeland Security Secretary and Border Patrol Chief implied that carrying a holstered concealed firearm is justification for being executed. Every American regardless of political persuasion needs to come together to ensure this kind of behavior has no place in America.

Thank you, EPD, for keeping everyone safe
On behalf of several Eureka residents at Sunday’s (Jan 25th) demonstration at the County Courthouse, I would like to thank the Eureka Police Department for their efforts in maintaining safety for the people standing along 5th Street. In particular, we appreciate the coordinated effort by the EPD in enforcing speed limits of cars traveling past the Courthouse.
Thank you,
— Leslie VanderMolen, Eureka
