Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, has responded to backlash from Second Amendment advocates and MAGA allies after threatening jail time for anyone who enters the nation’s capital with a gun.

During an interview with Fox News on Monday, Pirro said that if anyone “brings a gun into the District, you mark my words, you’re going to jail.”

“I don’t care if you have a license in another district, and I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else,” the former Fox News anchor added. “You bring a gun into this district, count on going to jail and hope you get the gun back.”

Her comments — which came as she discussed how D.C. has gone three weeks without a homicide in 2026 — sparked immediate backlash from conservatives.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) wrote on X that “Second Amendment rights are not extinguished just because an American visits DC.”

“American gun owners who conceal carry are among the most law-abiding citizens in the nation,” DeSantis posted. “They are friends of law enforcement; they should not be targeted by law enforcement.”

The National Association for Gun Rights, a grassroots organization, called Pirro’s comments “unacceptable and intolerable,” adding: “Bureaucrats act like the 2A does not exist and brag about jailing people for exercising their rights.”

A wave of Republican members of Congress threw cold water on her remarks, including Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas.), who claimed that “this is not how this works.” Roy called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to “have a quick conversation & course correction here.”

Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) said he brings a gun into the district every week, noting that he has a license to carry in both Florida and D.C.

“And I will continue to carry to protect myself and others,” Steube said. “Come and Take it!”

Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) also weighed in, saying that the “right of Americans to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”

“Shall NOT be infringed is NOT a suggestion,” Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) noted.

Several GOP lawmakers called for the passage of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would broaden recognition of concealed carry permits across state lines.

Pirro took to her personal social media account to address the blowback, appearing to walk back the interview.

“Let me be clear: I am a proud supporter of the Second Amendment,” Pirro wrote in a post on Tuesday. “Washington, D.C. law requires handguns be licensed in the District with the Metropolitan Police Department to be carried into our community. We are focused on individuals who are unlawfully carrying guns and will continue building on that momentum to keep our communities safe.”

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche added to her comments: “This Administration and Department of Justice will fiercely protect Second Amendment rights.”

Pirro also posted a video of her speaking to the camera, in which she mentions that she is a “proud supporter” of the Second Amendment and owns guns herself. It included a message to fellow gun owners: “Put your safety back on.”

“You need to be responsible, and every responsible gun owner I know makes sure that they understand the laws, where they are going and understand whatever registration requirements there might be,” Pirro said. “President Trump’s goal here, and my goal as well, is to make sure we take guns out of the hands of criminals.”

Pirro’s comments came less than a week after President Donald Trump angered some gun-rights advocates after claiming that “you can’t walk in with guns” in the wake of the second fatal shooting by a federal officer in Minnesota.

“The NRA unequivocally believes that all law-abiding citizens have a right to keep and bear arms anywhere they have a legal right to be,” the organization wrote on X last week.
